Kate Morgan, Winemaker, Jilyara Estate

KATE MORGAN

Kate Morgan is humble, detail driven and impassioned. At Jilyara, she makes nurtured, classic, and vibrant wines.

Kate joined the family at Jilyara at the label’s inception in 2018. With more than two decades of winemaking under her belt she attributes her winemaking approach to letting the fruit speak for itself.

Guiding the fruit through the process of winemaking, Kate is committed to letting fruit sing and carefully selecting oak formats to compliment varietals.

Never one to be bound by a recipe, her masterful palate and refined winemaking skills are flexed each year – responding to the presentation of the vintage instead of making wines according to a calculation. Going with the flow so to say.

2002 was the beginning of Kate’s winemaking career, cutting her teeth at Coriole Vineyards in the McLaren Vale wine region.

Since graduating university with a Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology, she has dirtied her hands in high-flying wine regions around the world including vintages in South Australia, Hunter Valley, Tamar Valley, Yarra Valley, Oregon (USA), the Swan Valley, Margaret River, the United Kingdom and Portugal.

Finding her way to Margaret River (now home) was always the goal for Kate; a climate and community that offers world class winemaking opportunities – a notion cemented by her years of travel.

Cool and casual on presentation but a seriously regarded winemaker on the national stage, Kate has been celebrated as a finalist for both Young Gun Winemaker of the Year and Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year.
